To that end, the University developed the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) to provide our students with rigorous and guided undergraduate research experiences. UROC is a cross-campus center that trains, supports, and engages students in undergraduate research. UROC students work on relevant and innovative research projects at CSUMB, and at regional, state, national, and international research institutions. Their work is guided by a research mentor, supported by UROC staff, and augmented by extensive training in research proposal writing, presentation skills, communication skills, professionalism, and graduate school preparedness. Students are also given the opportunity to communicate their work to the academic community through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Taken together, these experiences prepare our students for successful academic or professional careers.
Bringing an extensive knowledge of assessment and educational research in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines, the Assessment and Educational Research Associate will guide UROC's efforts to deeply understand, assess, and improve research-based learning and undergraduate research programming. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of UROC, the Research Associate will have three primary responsibilities: designing and implementing UROC's research and evaluation agenda at the student, course, and program levels; disseminating UROC's findings to the broader undergraduate research community through conference presentations and scholarly journals; and assessing UROC-related curriculum and programming (both formal and informal). The Research Associate will also work closely with staff and faculty to design, develop, and implement program activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop and implement a research agenda for UROC related to undergraduate research programming, interventions, and curricular enhancements. This will include a survey of existing research; identifying relevant and applied research questions; determining research feasibility; and managing UROC's Institutional Review Board application and documentation.
- Communicate UROC's research findings via talks, conference presentations, and publications.
- Develop curriculum assessment tools for UROC-based and UROC-funded curricula.
- Research, develop, and submit funding proposals that advance the vision and mission of UROC and CSUMB.
- Monitor, support, and collaborate with staff and faculty to capture and disseminate the results of grant-funded science courses and tutoring.
- Collaborate with faculty on grant-driven activities, such as course and assessment development.
- Provide professional guidance, advice, and general direction to UROC Training and Research Coordinators in support of program activities.
- Collaborate with UROC's external evaluator on all evaluation activities, including Data-Based Decision-Making.
- Identify and initiate special projects that capitalize on UROC evaluation and program results that may include special reports, campus updates, conference presentations, and publications.
- Collaborate with staff on designing and delivering UROC's Undergraduate Research Seminar (RSCH) series.
- Develop, in collaboration with appropriate faculty, instructional modules and assessment of scientific writing.
- Develop, in collaboration with the Assistant Director of UROC, appropriate UROC communication materials (e.g. website language, presentations, mentor guides, campus communications, etc.).
- Lead training activities, such as assessment workshops and evaluation of undergraduate research, as needed.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, CSU Monterey Bay programs, and external partners (e.g. agencies, universities, and community colleges).
- Oversee grant documentation, tracking, and reporting.
- Generate assigned annual and final grant reports with support from UROC staff.
- Provide regular oral and written progress and summary reports as needed.
- Attend committee and planning meetings on an as needed basis.
- Carry out responsibilities in accordance with Corporation, CSUMB policies and procedures and applicable Federal, State, and local laws.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Extensive knowledge of modern developments, trends, and theories in educational research, assessment, evaluation, particularly in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of educational research, program evaluation, course assessment, curriculum development, and strategic planning.
- Extensive knowledge of Human Subjects in Research protocols and Responsible Conduct of Research principles.
- Superior writing, critical assessment, and synthesis skills.
- Knowledge of standard measures and statistical tools used in psychology, educational research, assessment, and evaluation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of higher education.
- Knowledge and ability to produce research articles worthy of peer-review publication and professional conference presentations.
- Ability to think creatively and conceptually, and to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough, and creative solutions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with administration, faculty, students, and community partners.
- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills utilizing tact, diplomacy, and patience.
- Ability to manage complex projects, work independently as well as collaboratively, and complete tasks on time.
- Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports, proposals, and publications.
- Ability to present complex material publicly at conferences and/or meetings.
- Ability to work within a project management framework of deadlines and deliverables.
- Advanced computer literacy, including word-processing, statistical software, graphics, and database work; relationship database experience a plus.
- Knowledge and familiarity with Federal grant proposals, grant awards, and required documentation and reporting.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration, multiculturalism and diversity, community service, and institutional excellence.
- Experience working with diverse and multicultural populations and the ability to guide students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds to higher levels of skills development.
Education and Experience:
Equivalent of a Ph.D. degree in Psychology, Science, Education, or a related field, AND three (3) years of progressive professional responsibility in assessment, evaluation, program planning, or curriculum development.
SPECIAL CONDITION(S) OF EMPLOYMENT:
Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements identified above are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Ability to complete web-based training in Defensive Driving and continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.
NOTE: Candidates identified for hire with the University Corporation at Monterey Bay must successfully complete a criminal background check.
Supervisory and/or management experience preferred. Familiarity with Data-Based Decision-Making.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The salary for this position is commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. University Corporation positions are at-will employment.
